Our History

A public educational media company, Groupe Média TFO is implementing major steps in its transformation towards becoming the Franco-Ontarian omni-channel media of reference, and is one of the pioneers of digital transformation in Canada. Long before its independence, La Chaîne was officially created in 1987. In 2008, the OTELFO Act was enacted giving TFO, Ontario's French-language television channel, its independence. TFO quickly made a name for itself by the quality of its educational content and its sense of innovation. Discover TFO's exceptional journey below!

      OMNICHANNEL TRANSFORMATION

      • The FLIPFest finale takes place on September 25th and crowns its winners. The contest, launched at the beginning of the 2019 school year for all school boards in the province, was designed to help young Franco-Ontarians in Grades 7 and 8 overcome their linguistic insecurity.

      • Groupe Média TFO undertakes a digital reinvention, shifting towards becoming an omnichannel media company. This digital transformation adds power and drive to our Franco-Ontarian content, in accordance with the interests of our audiences, across a network of interconnected channels on TV, Web platforms and applications.

      • Based on its strategic plan, which is anchored in employability skills training and the vitality and influence of Ontario's Francophonie, Groupe Média TFO renews its branding to focus on its values : to better serve Francophone and Francophile audiences amidst ever-changing content consumption patterns.

      • A new mandate is given to Groupe Média TFO: the Ontario government introduces new OTELFO legislation at Queen's Park, proposing to entrust the administration, coordination and support of French-language e-learning in Ontario to Groupe Média TFO.

      • To meet one of the objectives of its 2020-2022 strategic plan, TFO creates the Groupe Média TFO Influence Rating in the Francophonie, a way of evaluating its role as a driving force for the French Fact in society in Ontario, Canada and internationally.

      • TFO, IDELLO.ORG and BOUKILI.CA are offered, free of charge, during the entire COVID-19 period to provide practical and efficient educational moments for the whole family.

      • In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic spreading across the globe, Groupe Média TFO launches Le Camp TFO en Famille less than 48 hours after the announcement of school closures. The initiative is set up to support Francophones and Francophiles across Ontario and Canada during this period.

      • As a catalyst of the Canadian Francophonie and a driving force of the French fact, Francophone culture and its many faces, TFO has become the first Canadian broadcaster of the “My French Film” digital festival. Groupe Média TFO, in collaboration with UniFrance, offers a unique cinema experience to Francophone and Francophile audiences in Canada.

      • TFO's Virtual Worlds Lab (LUV) appears on Prime Time (Ottawa), unveiling its new branding.

      • While on the lookout for new ways to support TFO’s sustainability, Groupe Média TFO has decided to establish a New Revenue Streams and Philanthropy department, inviting the private sector to support investments in content production, thus better meet the needs of young audiences.
